Microplastic Identification via Holographic Imaging and Machine Learning

A study conducted by researchers from the Cnr Institute of Applied Sciences and Intelligent Systems reveals a new method that can distinguish microplastics from microplankton in marine samples. The study was published in Advanced Intelligent Systems.   https://doi.org/10.1002/aisy.201900153

A holographic sensor and an innovative artificial intelligence method allow the automatic detection of the presence of microplastics in marine samples, distinguishing them from the microplankton: this is the important result of research published in Advanced Intelligent Systems (Wiley). The work involved two groups from the Institute of Applied Sciences and Intelligent Systems of the National Research Council (Cnr-Isasi): the digital Holography group of Pozzuoli, coordinated by Pietro Ferraro, in collaboration with the artificial intelligence group of Lecce. This research activity is carried out within the framework of the interdisciplinary project Pon Research and Innovation 2014-2020 "Systems for detecting marine pollution from plastics and subsequent recovery-recycling (Sirimap)", one of whose objectives is precisely the development of automatic techniques for monitoring plastics in the marine environment.
